Tired Feet At The End Of The Day? Bare Feet Are Not The Answer

As much thought and money we all spend on our shoes – for fashion and/or fitness – most of us don’t put a lot of thought into what we put on at the end of a long day. Just kicking off your shoes and walking barefoot is not enough to really ease the daily wear and tear on our weary feet, as good it might initially feel.

Many homes adhere to a ‘shoes off at the door’ policy, some just love the feel of walking around in bare feet at home, but as a podiatrist, the reality is: this isn’t the best option for optimal foot health. A recent article in which I was quoted in Prevention Magazine shares some really great information and tips on how to choose the best slippers with arch support. There are even some links to styles and brands I put my “seal of approval” on.

Walking in bare feet, especially on hard tile or cement floors, can actually exacerbate pain and inflammation. The pads on our feet get worn down, just like the soles of shoes. They are our body’s shock absorbers and need to be taken care of, especially as we age. There are plenty of options for this, including slippers and slides with adequate arch support, some great choices are listed in the article.

Fat Pad Injections Can Treat Heel Pain

This is a good time to mention that one of the procedures I do in my office is fat pad injections. As we age, the fat in our body begins to decrease, this also happens to our feet! The less cushion there is between the bone and the ground, the more pain and discomfort we feel. As you walk, your fat pads absorb much of the pressure and weight that is applied to the foot. The injections provide additional padding that you have lost, providing support and comfortable cushioning once again. The procedure is nearly painless, and patients notice the “plumping” effects gradually increase over the following 7-14 days. This is because the filler we use attracts water to its molecules. Our patients are able to fully walk and resume most activities immediately following the procedure. This can be a game changer, trust me!

Choose Slippers and Slides With Arch Support

I strongly encourage everyone to put as much thought into supporting and pampering their feet with house slippers & slides as they do when buying athletic and daily wear shoes. This simple improvement can make a huge difference, and have long-lasting effects, on pain reduction and therefore, your overall health and happiness.

Foot Care Specialist at Central Park SOLE

Central Park SOLE are experts in foot and ankle care. Various culprits can be to blame, including bacteria or fungus that live on your feet, in socks and shoes, or hyperhidrosis [excess sweating]. If left untreated, a slew of problems can arise, including athlete's foot, blisters, and toenail fungus. I've even treated injuries from slips and falls due to excess moisture on someone's feet. This is a real inconvenience in everyday life for sure, but one that can be treated and easily managed. And who wants to be shy or scared to take off their shoes in front of people?

What Causes Smelly Feet?

The odor associated with smelly feet is usually linked to bacteria or fungi that thrive and spread in dark, damp, tight spaces. Our shoes, therefore, are the perfect breeding ground! Wearing tight, ill-fitting, constricting shoes that don't allow your feet to breathe adds to the problem. Another cause may be your diet - spicy food smells can seep out through our pores (garlic fries, anyone?)- our hands and feet being the most affected. Genetics can also be to blame; if smelly feet run in your family, there is a chance you are predisposed.

What Causes Foot Odor and Who Does It Affect Most?

Recently, I was featured in this article on Eat This, Not That! Worst Habits for Smelly Feet, Say Experts- A few other specialists and I explain everything there is to know about smelly feet. I shared that many athletes deal with this issue because they are constantly in cleats or athletic shoes. Those warm, moist conditions create a perfect living environment for the bacteria and fungi I mentioned before. Another interesting tidbit is that hormonal teens also battle this problem; many parents come to me seeking treatment. Really, though, that funk we all know well is something anyone can be affected by.

Preventing and Treating Smelly Feet

Here are a few simple methods I suggest:

Change your socks often - even throughout the day

Wear shoes and socks made out of breathable materials – 100% cotton for socks

Rotate shoes so you aren't wearing the same pair every day – if damp or stinky, let them air-dry outside

Try over-the-counter antiperspirant creams specially formulated for footcare

Wash your feet and between your toes in the shower with soap; don't just rely on residual trickle-down water

If these methods don't get rid of your funky feet, call me! Or see your local doctor because there could be a more serious problem or infection that needs medical attention.

Botox® for Your Feet- End Excessive Foot Sweating

There are treatments and injections available now that are used to prevent sweating altogether on your feet. Central Park SOLE offers Botox®, for example, to block the nerves that trigger sweat glands. This is a great treatment option for those dealing with hyperhidrosis and excessively stinky feet, which are not caused by bacteria or fungi.

When to See an NYC Podiatrist to Treat Smelly Feet

In a city like the Big Apple, getting around on foot quickly and comfortably is absolutely essential. And, for many New Yorkers, being able to do it in their favorite pair of designer shoes is equally important. At Central Park SOLE, our esteemed NYC podiatrists offer innovative surgical solutions to restore the health and appearance of the feet, toes, and toenails. Contact us today or visit our office located on the Upper West Side.
